One of the most beautiful features of a garden is a well-trimmed hedge. It adds structure, style and an extra layer in any garden.

Autumn is the best time of the year to plant a hedge. Here, we have some more tips for fast-growing hedges.

1. Research is important. Read up more information on the plants you are interested in. Consider the purpose of the hedge: shelter, privacy, fencing, decorative border, peace and quiet or to screen/hide some eyesores (like AC units) or for shading.
2. Have a plan. Create a map of the area you're trying to cover. Add markers if you'd like to create straight rows.
3. Pick the correct area. Hedges grow best in full sun. However, some can grow in shade.

These are the types of hedges to consider:
1. Slow-growing, shorter ones - Buxus Sempervirens (can grow well in partial shade), Corokia.  Plant short hedge plants 40 cm apart.
2. Tall, fast-growing hedges - Pittosporum (hardy natives); Griselinia (for warmer areas);  Ake Ake red and  Ake Ake green (fast-growing natives)
3. Flowering hedges (eg Ake Ake green, native option)

Planting Tips
1. Prepare the area and use rich, well-draining soil. If planting near a house, be cautious when digging. There may be some piping or wires in the area.
2. Dig a hole as deep as the pot or bag the plant is in. It's best to get established plants to give you a stronger start with your hedges.
3. You may add seaweed tonic after planting along with a lot of water.
4. Add mulch.
5. Consistent deep watering during the first 1-2 years (growing period) will help the hedges grow significantly faster.
6. Feed every 6 months to improve soil fertility.

Pruning Tips for Hedges
1. After planting, avoid pruning for about a year to help the plants get established.
2. After 1 year, you may prune the hedges every 3-4 months. 
3. Once the hedge trees are established, it's best to prune them in late winter or early spring.
