Carrot planting guide

Who doesn’t love eating fresh carrots out of their garden? The taste of organic, fresh carrots is something that is utterly satisfying. If you’re new to planting carrots or just haven’ much luck, try some of our planting tips below:

  1. Choose a sunny spot with free-draining soil, loosen it with a garden fork.
  2. Add some fertilizer such as Tui organic seaweed or sheep pellets and dig through the soil
  3. Add a layer or vegetable mix
  4. Carrots can be susceptible to transplant shock, so we recommend soaking seedlings in seaweed prior to planting.
  5. Dig a hole about 4cm deep
  6. Space your seedlings 4cm apart in rows 20-30cm apart
  7. Water thoroughly once planted as carrot seedlings have a tendency to sulk when planted but they will perk up in about three to four days
  8. Feed regularly with seaweed
  9. Plant every 4 weeks so you have a constant supply over autumn

Tip: Plant your carrots in the afternoon so that the soil is warmed up for them.

If you notice that your carrots are growing in odd shapes and sizes it’s usually because they weren’t planted deep, not enough space between seedling or poor soil composition – if your soil is quite clay like or is lumpy and contains rocks and stones, your carrots won’t thrive. This is why the first step is quite crucial.

Plant your carrots with onions, leeks lettuce, rosemary and sage to encourage beneficial insect. Onions, leeks and garlic are a great companion plant as they keep away carrot fly.  Avoid planting with parsnips, brassicas and beets.

We hope this helps!

Enjoy your carrot harvests
